This is an extra stout porter. Unlike many stouts, Nightmare is not harsh or overly bitter. A smooth, massively flavoured creamy drink, best served on the ’warm’ side, allowing full appreciation of this four malt brew.

Nice! Roasted malt near perfection, good level of bitterness, dark chocolate, and a hint of anise. Drinks very dry. 4.4

Something in between a porter and a stout, this beer has an unstable head, very dark ruby red colour (near black) and strongly roasted aroma of coffee, bitter chocolate, toasted bread, peppery hops and plums; taste is smoothly malty, sourish touch, dryish, with strong coffee-like roasted bitterness and long peppery hop bitterness. Complex, with plenty of personality.

Cask @ JDW Liverpool Street Station. Pours dark brown with tan head. Lovely fruity taste with raisins, damsons, dark fruits and a roast finish. Flavoursome and moreish.

Bottle sample at a tasting at the Beer & Beyond shop. Thanks kerenmk. My notes say "Nick Stafford Nightmare Yorkshire Porter". Brown color with almost no head. Aroma is slightly oxidized with butter, malt, toast, caramel, a bit of chocolate, a mild roasty touch, nuts and a bit of fruitiness. Sweetish flavor, a bit oxidized, with toast, mild roast, nuts, caramel, light fruitiness a finish that is more roasty and bitterish. Light to medium-bodied.

Cask at the York Tap. First of all, you shouldn’t be able to see through a stout. This is dark brown at best. Looks like Stones bitter. Smells like liquorice and burnt toast. Oily mouthfeel. Not good.

Sampled from a 16.9 oz brown bottle this beer poured a very dark brown color - almost black with reddish highlights and a small creamy brown head that left a bit of lacing. The aroma was malty molasses, vanilla, a bit of wood, a touch roasty and with a sour presence. The flavor was sour, roasty, woody and a touch smoky. Medium finish. Medium body though a bit flat. Blah.

Cask @ JDW Elgin [290113]
Dark ruby, light tan dense head, clear, good lacing. Nose of dark caramel, toffee, soft roast, dab of chocolate. Taste of roast, dark toffee, hedgerow hop, some fruity yeast, slightly salty, dark fruity malts, quuite complex. Medium body and smooth texture, fruity palate. Finish - smooth, fruity hedgerow, bitter lingering roast with a touch of dark fruity malts, coffee and yeast, quite long linger and a bit dry.
Overall - Stout?....more like a hybrid old ale / porter...it’s good but not 90+ on rb

Draft: Charred oak, red currant nose. Cola black, thin head. Flavor is a combination of char and tartness. Charcoal and currant are discernible. Old school style porter.
