When we saw our head brewer Amy heading back from a nearby farm with a punnet of freshly-picked wild Scottish raspberries, we knew jam wasn’t on her mind. Sure enough, they were the latest under-bonnet tinkering with our beloved Old Engine Oil.

Dominuja ciemne slody brazowa barwa piwa z czerwonymi refleksami, ciemna piana spora i trwala. Palonosc srednia, oleista struktura troche nawet czarne oliwki wyczulem. Lekka kwaskowosc malin ciekawy dodala akcent do porterowego wrazenia jaki ostatecznie robi to piwo.

330ml bottle @ Chez Sophie, Shrewsbury. Pours dark with tan head. Aroma is soft raspberry pips. Taste thankfully brings a subtle raspberry influence before a good meaty earthy roast finish. The raspberry is there but only to provide a hint of colour to things. Very good indeed.

Bottle from Trafalgar Wines, Brightonia. It pours pretty much black with a decent light tan head. The aroma is smooth, mellow roasted malts, creaminess, toasted stuff, cocoa, coffee and a bit of berry fruit. The taste is smooth, rich roasted malts, coffee grounds, earth, wood, toast, cacao nibs, fairly restrained raspberry character (I expected more) and a touch of jam with a dry, toasty finish. Medium body and average carbonation. Well rounded and drinks easy, but lacks a touch of punch.

Bottle at Taps Beer Bar, Changkat, Kuala Lumpur. Poured a clear dark brown with a frothy off white head. The aroma is roasty old engine oil malt, light raspberry citrus, light creamy yeast. The flavour is moderate liqourice bitter with a smooth, rich jammy raspberry fruit, light acid citrus palate. Medium to full bodied with average carbonation. I was expecting a fruit bomb but I was pleasantly surprised that the raspberry did not dominate. A great session ale.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of Marmite, wood and roasted malt. Flavour of sharp berries and tangy stewed tea. Thin body with a watery texture. Light fizz. I didn’t get much of raspberry in this, but it’s a nice beer nonetheless.

Almost opaque dark brown beer, tidy pale tan head. Palate is light, semi dry and has decent fine carbonation. Mild dark malts, touch of dark chocolate. Unsweet raspberry jam, in fact mildly bitter. Thin dry finish. Lacks something. Needs a bigger backbone. Okay.
