When we saw our head brewer Amy heading back from a nearby farm with a punnet of freshly-picked wild Scottish raspberries, we knew jam wasn’t on her mind. Sure enough, they were the latest under-bonnet tinkering with our beloved Old Engine Oil.

Bottle from the lcbo. Pours black, with a medium beige head. Aroma is nice and roasty, subtle sweetness with some cocoa powder and light coffee. Silky mouth feel,,soft carb. Finish is quite a bit more bitter than i expected, lots of roast and a soft berry sweetness. A pretty big bitter porter with some light berry notes.

330ml can from Beer52 subscription box. Pours black, small tanned head, decent retention. Aroma is roasted malts, fruity raspberry, coffee, dark chocolate. Quite an intense solid roasty stout aroma with a little raspberry thrown in. Promising. Raspberry is more noticeable in the flavour with the fruitiness in the fore and then the other elements come in particularly dark chocolate, some coffee bitterness. Medium bodied, smooth with light oiliness. Good solid flavoured stout.

Bottled. Deep brown colour, mediumsized off-white head. Aroma is raspberries, some roasted, chocolaty and mild toffeeish tones. Flavour is raspberries, roasted tones with some chocolate and sweet malty tones to it. A bit thin in the finish, otherwise quite nice.

Can from Beer52. Black with a very light fizz and a decent beige-to-tan head. Cocoa and milk chocolate up front with a moderate roastiness to follow. Quite smooth but maybe a tad thin. Good balance between bitter and sweet. There's just a vague hint of sourness and a waft of raspberries in the finish. Would have liked the raspberries to come through a bit more; as it is it's just an average stout and the raspberries are lost in it.

Thin beige collar on a dark reddish brown still body. Malt, nutty & roasted aroma. Medium bodied, smooth & clean on the back. Malt, burnt, nutty, roasted & berry tastes with a tangy finish. Easy drinker.

Can from Beer 52. Pours a very dark reddish brown with a small beige head. Aroma starts off as roasted malts, but then gets taken over by raspberries. Pretty much the same thing happens in the mouth. So far, so good. But then bitter coffee grounds come through and clash totally with the raspberries. Not a successful combination in my book.

[33cl can from Beer52.] An opaque glossy black pour with a tight pale tan head; aroma of raspberry and chocolate; smooth and oily in the mouth with nicely roasted chocolate malts and some tart raspberry; then a lasting biscuity finish with burnt grains and more raspberry. Nicely balanced.

Bottled. A black beer with a brown head. The aroma has notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and raspberries. The flavor is sweet with notes of roasted malt, chocolate, and raspberries, leading to a bitter finish. I like the original a lot better.
