When we saw our head brewer Amy heading back from a nearby farm with a punnet of freshly-picked wild Scottish raspberries, we knew jam wasn’t on her mind. Sure enough, they were the latest under-bonnet tinkering with our beloved Old Engine Oil.

330 ml. bottle. BBF 04/2018. Dark brown, uneven mocha bubbles. Nose is low umami, weak mocha syrup, cheap stale chocolate, poor mocha syrup,... Taste is basic cheap mocha, cacao powder, low instant coffee, cheap plastic, poor cheap cacao, low umami, herbal leaves,... Poor thin cheap cacao, mocha body,... Disappointing, this poorer than I remember the base being or my taste changed but it is quite weak & the raspberry is completely absent which makes it an even bigger bummer.

Bottle sample at a tasting at Max’s place. Thanks Max. Dark brown with a light reddish hue and a tan head. Roast, coffee, chocolate, a berry note, a bit of licorice, sweetish, light sourish hint, bitterish finish. Nice.

330ml bottle. Darkest brown colour with late awakening, average, thick creamy, moderately lasting and lacing, beige to tan head. Earthy, fruity, raspberry aroma. Taste is slightly dry, dark malty, fruity notes of raspberry are somewhat restricted, some malty spiciness and a touch of lovage interferes.

Bottle. Black color with beige head. Aroma is roasted malts, sweet raspberries, coffee. Taste is raspberries, coffee, chocolate. Surprisingly sweet, but also tart. Oily viscous mouthfeel. Bitter finish. Nice, but a bit too sweet, respectively the raspberries give a bit of an artificial feeling.

Very solid and creamy porter with a nice splash of raspberry. Gives it some freshness, acidity and fruit while maintaining balance. Nice!

Bottle from Chester Beer and Wine [080916]
Black, small tan head, light lacing
Aroma of slight roat, no raspberry, very dull nose
Taste of dark malts, soft roast, dab of chocolate, no raspberry, not much going on here
Palate - Soft carb, medium body, quite rich texture, slight tang. Finish ia a bit dry, has more bitter roast, slightly metallic linger
Overall - Not as good as Old Engine Oil as I recall. No raspberry at all. Disappointed. Expected it to be much better. Maybe it’s too old.
