Wheat beer has always been known as an elixir or tonic; especially when unfiltered with the brewer’s yeast still in the bottle. Organic Wheat Beer is golden, fruity – the naturally occurring fruit esters from the yeast give prominent citrus and banana flavours – and thirst quenching.

Bottle from The Beerhive. Hazy golden body with a thin white head. Steady carbonation. No lacing. Aroma of bubblegum, banana, white pepper and green apple. Flavour of chalky wheat, white sugar and banana bread. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. Average fizz. Subtle and delicate.

Keg at the Earl of Lonsdale - Notting Hill, London. Pours hazy gold with a creamy white head. The nose holds lots of sugary wheat bread, grain, ripe lemon, ripe bananas. Medium sweet flavor with more sugary, lightly doughy wheat bread, tangerine meringue, white sugar, cereal, biscuits, yeast. Light to medium bodied with fine carbonation. Finishes sweet and bready with lots of bruised banana, doughy wheat bread, some citrus, bubblegum. Not bad. I warmed up to it.

Keg at Glasshouse Stores, Soho. It pours cloudy orange-amber with a decent white head. The nose is big sweet banana bread, clove, apple, pear, wheat bread and hay. The taste is crisp, bitter-sweet, wheat bread, banana, orange rind, straw, hay, pepper and clove with a dry finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Well rounded and quaffable. Solid wheat.

On tap at Chandos, Charing Cross. Yellowish-orange, cloudy, minimal head. Aroma is very Hefeweizen: a concentration on sourdough and banoffee pie. The taste doesn’t live up to the aroma: sweet but without bringing out the scrummy flavours promised in the aroma. Short finish and a surprisingly weak palette. Good enough but instantly forgettable.

Anchor Tap Sam Smiths, Tower Bridge. Keg. As ’Organic Wheat Beer’. Hazy gold beer, small white head. Smooth palate with fine carbonation. Smooth wheaty malt hosts clean but not strident banana. Little cloves. Smooth finish. A straight down the line wheat, but clean and drinkable.
