St Austell’s most legendary ale, Hicks is fullbodied strong and Cornish, brimming with a kaleidoscope of flavours. Brewed with plenty of malt and lashings of English Fuggles and Golding hops, Hicks is truly a classic ale of considerable depth and complexity.

Cask at the Seven Stars, Dartmouth, 28/08/21. Clear chestnut brown with a good sized light beige head . Nose is dried fruits, toffee, nutty, raisins. Taste comprises fruit cake, brown bread, dates, raisins, toffee. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, light drying close leading to a bitter edge. Decent cask affair.

Bottle from Purely Cornish, Looe. Very dark clear amber with a small head. Very strong tasting, its alcohol content is very noticeable, however there's a nice traditional English malty bitterness to it as well.

Bottle @ 5% and not the 6% version which may still be doing the rounds. Ruby pour with small white head. Lighted roasted malt aroma. Quite sweet with a stewed stone fruit note that goes with the malt. Occasional chocolate notes comes through. Quite dry and bitter. Not bursting with flavour and abv to be a strong ale, yet has enough to not be a sessionable bitter. Not sure what to make of it except I'm not intrigued enough to buy again.

8th Sep 2019, The Atlantic in St Mary's, Isles of Silly. Hand-pulled half-pint. Mahogany/deep copper body, clean and clear; on top a beige foam blanket. Malty front with toffee esters and flavours to the fore, some bitter hop action gives balance to a beer I used to love when I lived in Cornwall back in the late 1970's. It's still a lovely beer.
