bottle, pours hazy amber with a thin off white head. Aroma is sweet with candy sugar and maple syrup. Light sweet flavor of brown sugar with a moderate spiced finish with clove and cinnamon.

Appearance: From the bottle, pours an amber-brown with a thin, fizzy beige head. Aroma: Sweet, malty aroma with notes of dark fruits. Flavor: A malty sweetness leads the flavor with flourishes of honey, maple syrup, caramel and dark fruits like cherries and plum. Some light, hoppy bitterness comes at the end. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with tingly carbonation. Warm, alcoholic aftertaste lingers in the throat. Overall Impression: A rather nice beer, especially for the winter season. The dark character and rich, mildly complex flavor and warming sensation make this a fine cold-weather beer. Comments: Another solid offering from Smuttynose. I think these guys make some great brews.

Bottle. Dark brown with an orange tint. Decent head with lots of carbonation and fizzing. Aroma of chocolate malt and yeast, slightly earthy like a biere de garde. Flavor of malt, chocolate, a touch of caramel, roasted malt. Dried fruit. Sweet, but not overly so, moving into a hoppy dryness. Dry, hoppy and roasted finish. Chocolate remains. A very nice finish Decent, not overwhelmingly good, but rather complex and with good hop character.

Overall Impression: Solid, tasty winter ale, nice amount of spice. This is an interesting seasonal for sure, and another flavorful outing from Smutty.

Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a hazy dark brown with light ruby highlights and a small dark tan head. The aroma was a lovely mix of sweet and tangy malts, cherry and cognac. Flavor was an enticing mix of tart, tangy lightly bitter malts mixed with ripe cherries, caramel and a touch of nutmeg and chocolate. The finish was long tart cherry and caramel. The mouthfeel was rather thick. Lovely.

Nice deep burnt copper coloured body with a thin off-white, fast-dying head. Aroma of hops, metal, malt, a nice subtle spice and some light nuts. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong taste of malt up front with a large nuttiness and a bit of a sweetness near the tail end. Aftertaste shows the maltiness and nuts more than anything else. Overall, not a great beer - the spices don’t show anything and the rest of the beer is pretty lacking. I sampled this twelve ounce bottle purchased from Chevy Chase Wine & Liquors in Washington D.C. on 30-December-2005.

Bottle from Vintage Cellar. Aroma is mildly spicy and fruity. Color could be mahogany with a beige head that rapidly flattened. Medium bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is roasted caramel and has some dark fruit, but more spice - and some of the spice has a bite. Could be ginger there. There’s also a lot of something like hazelnut. A relatively mild winter ale, but complex enough to keep your interest. Maybe it’s the Trappist yeast. Like a Belgian brune? Nice ale, and there seems to be vanilla in the finish.

Dark ruby color, small beige head. Chocolaty and a bit sweet aroma, slightly spicey (ginger?). Medium-bodied. Yeasty, nutty brew with some spices in it (like clove). Does not quite hit the spot, but has at least kind of wintery feeling in it.

12oz bottle. Deep, dark, brown color with a tinge of stained-glass red. Dry and brown sugary aroma. Never really thought of it as a Belgian Dubbel, due to the lack of any style/ingredient information of the label. ABV remains a mystery. Smooth and creamy, a very well-balanced beer. Faint hops in the finish add to the drinkability. Very nice winter beer.

OK, but lacking the heft and depth of a good dubbel. Pours a clear copper with a fizzy, off-white head that disappears. Malty nose with a hint of leather. Brown sugar, toffee. The flavor is moderately sweet, lightly tangy and mildly acidic. Medium body. Watery texture. Average carbonation. Long finish, but the tongue is left with a taste of grain.
