This entry to our You Earned It series is First Chair, Last Call, a winter ale. You Earned It is a program in which our team members take turns brewing a batch of beer on our pilot system. A portion of the sales from draft pours and cans sold are donated to a non-profit of their choice.

An epic crew of mountain-obsessed Bissell team members came together for this one: taproom manager James Krams, packaging manager Geoff Ballou, and taproom experts Nate Travis and Niko Burgess — with Nate Travis providing some killer can art. They brewed First Chair, Last Call to benefit Protect Our Winters, a non-profit that helps passionate outdoor people protect the places and lifestyles they love by focusing its efforts on legislation regarding climate change.

First Chair, Last Call is our mountain ale, designed specifically for ski season in Maine. Conceived by Bissell Brothers’ resident shredders, First Chair is brewed with Maine-grown rye and Vienna malts and hopped with a ruggedly handsome blend of Chinook, Simcoe, and Mosaic. The perfect companion to lift rides, no matter what slope you’re headed for.

Pours a rather ugly, brown mishmash (kind of looks like bad homebrew), with a large, fluffy, lasting head. Aroma is hops, pine, cracker, bread. Flavors follow. Soft, smooth mouthfeel. Mild hop bitterness through the finish.

16 oz draft. Aroma is milled grain and soft toffee. Flavor follows with the addition of a mild spruce in the finish. The spruce-like characteristic balances the malt. Pretty straightforward and would work well on the ski slope.
