NOT FOR THE TIMID. This non-traditional beer is an Oatmeal Stout, Milk Stout AND an Imperial Stout all in one. With a complex flavor profile ranging from coffee to chocolate, the sweetness is complemented with Nugget and Centennial hops to produce an extraordinary finish. But with an 8.5% ABV, don't let the smooth taste fool you - this beer is like the Kern at high water.

Pours black with a hint of rosy brown refracting through the base of the glass. The head is a creamy mass of uneven tan bubbles. Lots of lacing. The aroma is black coffee, milk chocolate, roast and herbal/citric hops. The chocolate and coffee notes are dominant, and it reminds me of a good mocha more than anything. It tastes surprisingly sweet, which works nicely with the coffee and chocolate malt flavor. Hop bitterness quickly reins things in, and the finish is all bitter citrus and roast. Mouthfeel is creamier and chewier than I’d normally expect from an 8% abv beer.

Sample at the brewpub. Pours opaque brownish-black with a medium tan head that dissipates steadily. Partial sheet of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and grain. Medium, dry body with flavors of malt, espresso, chocolate and hops. The finish is roasty with a coffee aftertaste. Above average overall.

Bottle (marked at 8.5%). I am bummed I have to miss Batch #2 Barrel Aged Class V on Wednesday, but family is more important. I guess I’ll see it next year, right Kyle/Eric? Pours with a brown head that stays and a pretty much black body. Big aromas of coffee, leather, creamer, earth, dark cocoa, lots of bitterness. Very roasty and earthy. Flavors are ashy with lots of espresso. Slight acidic coffee flavor. Earthy. Tons of chocolate. Pretty lively bubbles for a stout. Lots of flavor, but there is an acidity to it. I am pretty sure that this is coming from the roast/coffee, and not from an infection. Creamy mouthfeel. Very nice. Good lingering bitterness. Looking forward to the BA one (this year or next year).

Bottle @ Papsø. Tasted blind. Pours pitch black with a small creamy head and lacings. Nose is roasted coffee. A bit of butter and sweet chocolate. Full bodied. Dry and roasted flavor with some ashy notes and balanced - not too dominating - chocolate. Sticky and oily. Quite hoppy end. Nice
