Bottle. Attractive pour: dark brown (looks pretty thick as it pours) with a slow forming tan head of foam and suds. Aromas have a mix of cocoa, cream, alcohol, vanilla extract. Flavor is pretty nice... much more charcoal and peat that the nose led me to anticipate, but it’s really nice. Chocolate and vanilla/cream lead off, but the finish is bitter and earthy.

Sampled at the January ’10 Metro Detroit tasting. Thanks to whoever brought this. Poured near black with a thick dark brown head. Aroma was a nice combo of licorice, dark chocolate and coffee. Flavor was more just notes of dark chocolate and coffee. It was a bit thin on the tongue.

Sample at the "From Russia With Suds" tasting on 01/02/10: The beer pours sludge black with a medium tan head that diminishes steadily. Patches of lacing on the glass. Roasty aroma of coffee and malt. Rich, smooth body with flavors of burnt malt, toast, coffee and dark chocolate. Some boozy elements as well. The finish is more burnt malt with dark fruit and malt left over. Enjoyable all around, and competitively priced.

Aroma: Aroma is quite malty, with roasted coffee, chocolate, burnt malts, and toasted caramel
Appearance: Pours an opaque black color with a lasting fizzy brown head that leaves lots of lace
Flavor: Taste is heavy on the malts as well, full, rich dark malt flavor, bittersweet chocolate
Palate: This one has a full body, a rich, thick texture, with soft carbonation, and no ABV burn
Overall Impression: When you boil it down it is a pretty standard, but still well-made Impy Stout. All the classic components are there. It has some very nice flavors, its well constructed, and works pretty well. It drinks quite smoothly, always a good sign when a beer has an ABV over 10%. It also has just enough hops to provide the needed balance. Really, it just works. It's not the most original beer ever created, but me thinks it is pretty well crafted.

Courtesy of kiefdog. Pours deep dark with clear brown edges and thin tan head. The aroma is rich, yummy and drool inducing. It smells of sweet caramel mixing with burn molasses and roastiness. I then get a rich sugary fudge note. Wow! The taste is sweet burnt molasses bleeding into dark roastiness, modest burnt and drying malts. It gets a bit chocolate malt ball like into the finish with lingering roasty to burnt malts. YUM!

Bottle from the Coop in Davis, CA. Pours opaque black with a huge dark tan head. Strong aromas of chocolate, burnt malt and coffee. Near full bodied with smooth, mild carbonation. Flavor is coffee, dark malt, and chocolate. Finish is a bit treacle and vanilla. Mostly chocolate though. Really good experience.

22oz bottle-pours a rich retaining light brown head with thick bubbles on top and black color. Aroma is dark malt-chocolate/ashy, alcohol. Taste is dark malt-chocolate/ashy/roasty, alcohol, secondary astringent hops. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing.

They nailed the appearance on this one - coal black, with a thick, frothy tan head - aroma of dark roast coffee, sweet cream, cocoa, light anise, some cherry and berries - low carbonation, creamy mouthfeel - a lot of intense espresso bitterness and dry cocoa in the flavor - some vinous character through the middle, followed by a tiny bit of astringency and floral hops - finishes with a cream sweetness, with lingering coffee bitterness and tobacco underneath - a little flawed, but this is one of Otter Creeks most impressive offerings.

Sampled from a 22 oz brown bottle this beer poured thick, black and oily with a huge dark brown head that lingers. The aroma was rich sweet chocolate, dry toasty malt, light coffee and toffee with a faint undercurrent of floral hops.The flavor was sweet chocolate, ripe fruits, port wine, cocoa powder and toffee with a bitter floral hop presence in the middle. The finish was long with port wine, cocoa and fruity. The mouthfeel is thick, smooth and silky. The beer is so slick it coats the glass long after it is gone and the flavor linger enticingly. Fabulous!

Bottle courtesy of RealityDeviant on 04/30/2009. Dark black body with a medium creamy brown head. Sweet chocolate and coffee aroma wtih a roast background. Chocolate and coffee flavor with a bit of a bitter finish. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation.
