St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, is a magical figure, the bringer of gifts and an icon of holiday spirit. Forgotten by most is his evil side kick and enforcer of ‘the list’. European tradition says while St. Nick is busy delivering presents to good little boys and girls, Krampus hands out punishments to the bad. A fanged, goat-horned bully, the Christmas Devil uses sticks and chains to beat the naughty children. Dark malts and aromatic hops create the diabolical spirit of this brew. It is finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days. This Imperial Helles Lager will warm even the darkest hearts.

This season, replace the cookies with a bottle of Krampus. If he happens to pay a visit, toast to him with this devilish brew. Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!

A golden dark amber lager with a thin white head. A pleasant perfumey hops aroma, smooth, restrained and delicious. In mouth, a classy malty beer, imperial indeed, with biscuitty malt, czech hopping, quite nice. Simple and honest. Tasted Dec. 19 2009.

Tap. Sweet peach/cherry and barley malt. Clear copper color with nice head. Sweet peach malt with subdued lemon peel hops flavor. Excellent beer - nicely fruity without being too sweet and nicely blended.

22 oz. bomber bottle, $6 at Binny’s. Pours pretty dark for a helles. A rich, sweet malt smell from a distance. The label says it has Chinook and Willamette hops, usually part of an American Pale Ale, and you can start to smell them after a while. Taste has alcohol up front; despite attempts at civility, the alcohol still is pretty hot. I call it pale ale malts, but with a dry lager finish. Once I’m well into the bottle, the alcohol settles and becomes more warming. Hops are citrusy and have some pine cone to them, way off for a German beer, but this is clearly a style-buster anyway. Hey, speaking of Christmas, did you know the original 1967 recording of "Time Has Come Today" by the Chambers Brothers, the 11 minute version, blends in snippets of "The Little Drummer Boy?" Crazy, man! Guess I’m liking this beer, but I’ve got a headache coming on as I finish typing.

Bottle @ Hj Hansen, Odense. Pours clear amber with a creamy white head and lacings. Nose is nicely hopped. Grassy, and lots of grapefruit. Dry, bitter and crisp. Very simple and tasty. Grassy hops and a bit of grain. Full bodied and smooth palate. Nice. Re-rate Nov 2010. Draft @ C4, Odense. Very sweet and sticky malty. Bread and caramel. From 3,8 - 3,6.

Amber lager, darker than other lagers of its kind, kind of surprised me at first. Head dissipated quickly but stuck to the edges with each sip. Alcohol is present in aroma and taste, I also taste a hint of caramel and yeast. It’s a kitschy beer, purchased solely because my lady is hosting a Krampus themed party, at $7 a bottle I wouldn’t mind drinking again but won’t go out of my way to pick it up.

Sampled on draft at Fat Head’s in Pittsburgh PA this beer poured a dark caramel-amber color with a medium sized cream colored head. The aroma was alcohol, sugar and ripe fruits. The flavor was tangy, bitter and tart with notes of candied pears, apples and light floral hops. The alcohol shows through again. The finish was long, sugary and fruity. Full boded. Too boozy for my taste. Decent.
