St. Nicholas, aka Santa Claus, is a magical figure, the bringer of gifts and an icon of holiday spirit. Forgotten by most is his evil side kick and enforcer of ‘the list’. European tradition says while St. Nick is busy delivering presents to good little boys and girls, Krampus hands out punishments to the bad. A fanged, goat-horned bully, the Christmas Devil uses sticks and chains to beat the naughty children. Dark malts and aromatic hops create the diabolical spirit of this brew. It is finished with lager yeast and aged cold for no less than 30 days. This Imperial Helles Lager will warm even the darkest hearts.

This season, replace the cookies with a bottle of Krampus. If he happens to pay a visit, toast to him with this devilish brew. Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!

Deep amber. Chalk white head. Pineapple cookies exude from the nose. Cherries, mandrine oranges in rum. Wonderful. Full body, alcoholic, bready. Moderately sweet. Dry malty finish. Good, but a bit too much.

bottle - Pours light amber with a huge, dense, very long lasting head. It smells of malt, citrus, and a darker fruit. The flavor is moderately strong hops with fruity notes, especially citrus,a touch of spice, and a bitterness that lingers well in the finish. It’s full bodied, kind of different, and quite good though I can’t say it’s my favorite thing. Something about the overall experience didn’t work well enough for me to push this beer from very good to excellent.

Deep copper coloured body with orange highlights and a thick tan head. Nice! Aroma of strong piney and grapefruit hops, paint (LITERALLY), alcohol and a touch of spice. Medium to Full-bodied; Strong assertive hops in the taste with a mellow finish and a lot of malt and alcohol tucked in. Aftertaste shows some of the hop bitterness, a touch of apricots and fruit and then a lot of alcohol bite. Overall, a good, but rather under complex beer with everything accounted for. I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Liquor Outlet in Boonton, New Jersey on 14-March-2010, sampled at home in Washington on 29-March-2010.

Bottle 65 cl. Pours a clear reddish amber with an off-white head. Fresh, peachy hop aroma. Solid body, very sweet caramellish malts but it’s the peachy hops that dominate this leaving a dry bitterness.

nice malty sweet hoppy flowery, lager’ish dryness and citric in the aroma. super aroma for a lager type beer. appears clear red amber, smooth creamy offwhite to yellowish head, which doesn’t last very long but looks very good. flavor is quite bitter, hoppy bitter, hoppy flowery, dry caramelly, alc can be sensed but is hidden. I can sort of taste it indirectly. orange peel. tastes good but you might get bored with the bitterness and strong alc after a while.

Location: 22 oz bottle from Gilly's, 1/25/10

Aroma: It has some sweet citrus on the nose, it also has some flowers, some peppery spice, some pine, a bit of wood, caramel, and finally, it is rounded out by just a touch of alcohol (that grows stronger as it warms).
Appearance: This beer pours a hazy dark orange-brown color with a frothy beige head sitting atop it that leaves a good amount of lace on the glass. The head stuck around for the entire time I was drinking this one.
Flavor: The taste is sweet up-front, with some pepper and a pretty solid bitter hop backing.
Palate: This beer is medium bodied with average carbonation, and a somewhat sticky mouthfeel. The alcohol is pretty well-hidden, but you can still tell it is there.
Overall Impression: This a pretty cool beer, I'm a sucker for a name with a good story, and this one has one. "Merry Kramp-mas to all, and to all a good pint!" What a great line! A well-balanced brew. Another really interesting beer from Southern Tier, I like this one quite a bit. A bit different, and certainly one of the more interesting lagers out there that I have tried. I would really like to see more adventurous lagers out there. I know there are some, but we could always use more, especially from the top American Micro Brewers, like Southern Tier.

Draft. An amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma has notes of caramel, malt, and a bit of alcohol. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of caramel and medium notes of malt, straw, and metallic alcohol, leading to a dry nutty and lightly alcoholic finish.
