Juniper and piney hops build the framework for this bold dark ale. With its assertive bitterness and sweet malt finish, this beer stands tall above the rest.

On tap at McKay's, pours black with a medium tan head. Aroma brings out roasted malt and piney hops upfront. Flavour is along the same lines, with a nice balance of roasted malt and piney hops. Nicely balanced. Solid stuff.

Can from a branch of Total Wine in Sterling, Virginia. Deep brown in colour, with moderate carbonation and rocky, off-white, head. Light, citrus hops, rich and bready, and also slightly toasty malts, red berry sweetness, a whiff of pine and some chocolate richness before a lingering, dryish finish. Very good.

Pours a rich black from a can, thick khaki head leaves minimal lacing. Pine aroma is rich, but jars with the coffee and chocolate flavor. Some cola notes as well in the mouth. Good beer.
