Part of their Merry Craftmas 6-pack. Pours a dark brown colour, almost black, with ruby highlights. The head is beige-mocha, fizzy, not lasting very long and lacing is minimal. The mix of hops over the roasted malts give out rusty notes. The taste has this rustiness as well. Sweet flavours over the roasted malts. Way too sweet, nothing to blend with it. Maybe some coffee with time. I used to be a big fan of Belhaven brews before, but this whole pack was a bit of a downer.

330ml bottle thanks to a neighbour. Pours opaque dark brown with a thick beige head. Aromas of liquorice and metal, dark toffee. Taste is faint dark chocolate, more liquorice and metallic notes. Medium body, expected something a bit richer. Blackcurrant on the finish.

Pours pitch black body with very visible carbonation and small beige head. Smell is roasted malts, caramel and smoke. Thin body, highly carbonated. Perhaps a bit to high for the style. Texture is smooth. Roasty, bittersweet taste with some sour notes. Aroma of roasted malts, smoke, coal, caramel and brown sugar. Short finish with smoked mouthfeel. Overall, ok. Would be better with lower carbonation and fuller body. Aroma is kinda subdued by watery nature of this beer.

Sysimusta, todella runsaasti vaahtoava olut. Tuoksu vahvasti ruisleipäinen, hieman paahteinen. Maku paahteinen, hieman kahvinen ja suklainen, aika pehmeää juotavaa. Keskitäyteläinen suutuntuma, makeaa tavaraa. Voisi mennä jopa tummasta lagerista makeuden ja pehmeyden osalta.

Bottle from the Midtown BevMo in Sacramento, CA. Pours dark brown with a slight tan head. Aroma is sort of chocolate toffee/treacle. Med body at least. Flavor is dark smooth malt with some mild dark chocoate, and perhaps earthy coffee notes. Coffee comes with time. And the chocolate seems to be the earthy thing. Nice drink. Sweet stout? Not so much sweet, but some.

Black beer with a thick, beige head. Aroma is rich, malty coffee. Flavour is much as you’d expect after that but there’s a nice sweetness to it as well, fruity and chocolatey. The aftertaste is, oddly, ever so slightly watery to me but not nearly enough to dampen my enthusiasm for this one. Lovely beer.

With traditional oatmeal stout being a Scottish invention of the late 19th century, it seems only appropriate that classic Belhaven has since then added their own interpretation of the style, now apparently available in the largest Delhaize supermarkets in Belgium. Revisiting after five years since I first had this; thanks to Craftmember for sharing. Thinnish and quick to open, pale greyish beige, mousy, sparsely edge-retaining head, hazy dark chocolate brown robe with burgundy hue, blackish in general appearance but not quite. Aroma of toffee, wet toast, dried figs, burnt raisins, dried banana, roasted chicory, walnuts, muesli, whiff of coffee. Sweetish, soft onset, soggy banana bread, raisins and dried figs, medium to softish carb, supple caramelly malt body with lovely dark-nutty and toasty edges, the softness of the whole clearly attributable to the oats; nice coffeeish roasted bitterness in the finish with a herbal hop accent and a faint dash of warming alcohol, ending noble and characterful. Typical classy Belhaven, as old school as it gets for an oatmeal stout, but that was exactly what I was hoping for and this old Scottish brewing institute didn’t disappoint. Top class ‘old money’, will happily drink a third time...
