Tripel Belgian-Style Ale Brewed with Rice and Thai Basil
Our Summer seasonal, Trade Winds Tripel is a Belgian-style Golden Ale with a Southeast Asian twist. Instead of using candi sugar (typical for such a beer), we use rice in the mash to lighten the body and increase the gravity, and spice with Thai Basil. The result is an aromatic, digestible and complex beer made for a lazy summer evening.

Bottle from Cotteridge WIne: clear straw pour, where’s the head I need head, Ok the head is there but its small and white, interesting taste to this basil quite floral a bit like a candied fruit you get at xmas not unpleasant but different. Quite smooth mouth feel must be down to rice included in the brewing process.

Bottle. Pours a cloudy orange with a large frothy white head that lasts awhile leaving sticky lacing along the glass. The aroma is lemon peel and some funk. Thin mouthfeel with a sweet fruit and nice spice in the finish. Hides alcohol well, a good tripel from The Bruery.

Last year's vintage. Enjoyed in a white wine glass. Poured a dark caramel bronze. 2 finger white head faded fast. Sweet scents on the nose. Herbal and spicy. A nice spicy beer. Sort of malty and dry. Not sweet and a bready overall taste. The basil is muted. Has this garden like finish. 80% carbonation, medium body.

Interesting as aroma has distinct candi sugar...even though it is not in there. Sweet and tangy aroma. Sunset orange with white head. Head leaves too early and not much lacing. Orange and kafir lime with yeasty medium-full mouthfeel. Bright throughout with some nice balanced bitterness on the finish.

750 ml bottle from Julio’s Liquors. Paid $11.99 eight months ago. Transparent gold color. Ample carbonation producing thick, soapy white head. Sticky patches of lace down the glass. Drank at cellar temp. Nose is a subtle fruity yeast and light spice aroma. The rice and basil the brewers use sure give this style a different take. The body is lighter; more grainy then any triple I’ve had. The basil is noticeable in the finish. Has dry champagne like texture. Although it’s not what I look for in a triple, it has unique qualities and has a high level of drinkability. Very nice to try. After I glanced at some ratings, I am wondering if some folks rated the wrong brew… because this is NOT a typical Triple. It really is its own thing.

Sample on Day 2 of the Aces & Ales Strong Beer Festival on 08/13/2011. This beer is a clear yellow-gold color with a medium white head that burns away steadily. Thin rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of Belgian yeast, bready malt and spice. Medium body with a spicy yeast character and notes of fruit, malt and herbs. The finish is spicy with a yeasty aftertaste. Although I cannot detect basil I am sure it lent itself to the spiced tenor that lingers. Above average overall.
