The Duck-Rabbit’s Scotch Ale is a full-bodied, deep copper-colored treasure. Bold and malty, this beer’s sweetness comes from a massive quantity of grain complemented by some serious kettle caramelization. The flavor is rounded out by a warming alcohol sensation.

Bottle in a trade from Degarth. Thanks man! It’s a sad state of affairs when I have to get a beer from Florida that is brewed in a state that is 3 hours away. Pours a reddish chocolate brown with a one finger head. Very strong and complex aroma of rum, chocolate, cola and brown sugar. Strong caramel flavor rounded out by a bit of yeasty sourness. Nice texture. Very nice.

12oz bottle pours crystal clear amber with thin tan head. Full aroma of dark fruity esters of dates, prunes and bright deep red cherry candy. Behind the fruitiness I get caramel and faint earthiness. The taste is much like the aroma with an initial bolt of dark fruitiness from prunes, ripe cherries, dates and raisins. Midway sweet caramel surfaces along with some faint earthiness. Into the finish the dark fruity esters return with a mild pepper quality. A little too much with the dark fruity esters for the style. Still very enjoyable.

Bottle courtesy of Turdfurgeson: Poured a deep clear copper color ale with an average size head with average retention and minimal lacing. Aroma of sweet malt is quite intense. Taste is also dominated by the intense sweet malt with no notes of peat malt or toffee that I usually like in the style. This beer resemble more a barleywine then a scotch ale and was definitely too sweet for the style.

Aroma is pronounced candy with caramel. Color is cloudy brown with a medium golden head. Incredibly sweet, alcohol is evident. Very much like cough syrup, but with a thinner consistency. Weak and delayed but decent celery hop finish. Too sweet with nothing to balance it.

Bottle, best before 3/2007 consumed on 6/2/07
I actually also drank another bottle of it that was within its best before date, but I actually enjoyed this one more….go figure.
This style really seems to mesh with Duck Rabbit. Their mashing and and possibly malt choice seems to lead to a higher amount of breadiness and dryness on the finish, though all the beers are quite sticky-sweet up front. Though I’ve also had issues with a fair amount of wateriness/thinning of their beers, this one was, fortunately, quite free from that problem. Still poured a large, light-tan head atop a burgundy-tinted mahogany body, medium to medium-high clarity, though filtered it is. Lacing and retention are moderate.
Sweet prunes and thick nougat mixed with rich caramel and toffee provide a perfect opening note. Bits of bittersweet, dark fruits pop up, adding livliness and complexity, while walnuts and brown sugar keep things rich through the middle, ending on a softer aroma of vanilla and drier caramel. A slight hint of coffee is perceptible and though odd for the style, it adds more complexity and seems welcome. Medium to medium high strength of aroma with no flaws or alcohol noted.
Rich, well-malted flavor and mouthfeel is perhaps a bit underattenuated for my liking, but pretty spot-on for the style, with breadines, nuttiness and a strong vinousness all balancing on the finish, though the brown sugar and rich maple-toffee notes probably win out in the end. Looks like letting this one age for the number of months it did helped dry it out, because I really didnt get the painful sweetness others report, and I’m quite sensitive to too much sweetness. Slight undertones of woodsmoke and coffee, with brilliant tinges of acidic plums/prunes and tart berries to brighten things. Low, but not too low, is the carbonation, further accenting the silky-rich maltiness. No flaws/alcohol noted. Nice stuff....

(Bottle 35,5 cl) Courtesy of madsberg. Clear, amber golden with an off-white head. Fat, sweetish, burned caramel in the nose. Quite full-bodied with sweetish, burned caramel flavours and lots of fruity accents. Some vanilla in there too. Dry and hoppy finish. 310507

Bottle: Pours a rich ruby amber color with a beige head. Strong nose of malt, dark fruits, raison, and hops. Taste is rich with sugary notes, toffee, malt, caramel, and a hop bitternesss in the tail. The alcohol presence warms a bit in the trailer. Good scotch ale. Thanks to IndianaRed for sharing. Re-rate on 8/10/08: Seems more complex in the blend of sweetness, malt, candied fruit, toffee, and overall a subtle hint of nuts. Some vinous qualities. Very enjoyable to sip on and warms quite well. Oringinal rating 8/4/8/4/15.... New rating 8/4/9/4/16

Bottle (courtesy of TURDFERGUSON). Apple cider vinegar, caramel, and prune juice aroma. Reddish amber color with moderate head. Sweet cherry/prune juice initially followed by a nice biscuit flavor - very much like a scone with raisins chased with a shot of rum. Aftertaste of spiked fruitcake. A nice sipping beer to enjoy on a cold evening.

A red beer with a nice brown head. The aroma is very sweet with spicy notes - especially cinnamon. The flavor is extremely sweet and with the alcohol biting in the throat, but also with notes of wood, cloves, and cinnamon.

12 oz bottle in a trade from Ernest, thank you. Well I got to give themk credit for their labels, simple yet intersting enough to look at. I juts cant tell if its a Scottish rabbit or Duck, damn these pranksters. Just got the package from Ernest, pulled it out and just started drinking it about 30 minutes since being home. I let the fact that the packege spent all day outside my door serve as the fridge. Pours dark rown with a small white head that soon fades away. Aroma is good Scotch Ale, very strong, peaty, sweat malt, slight caramel. But right up the ale of a good Scotch. Taste is similar, a bit more caramel coming out, the Scottish booziness is there. Earthy, wet forrest, all around. Some chocolate. Flavors meld pretty well. A bit light on body for me. Mouthfeel defeinitely has a prickly feel, not comfortable for a Scotch Ale. Low bitterness, finish is all Scotch Ale at the tail end with malty sweetness. No sense of hops at all, nice job on a style that is often hard to master.
