On October 13, 2007, at our Brewery Tenth Anniversary Party (Waffles and Puppets) we introduced Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence Stout to the world. Chocolate Indulgence comes with a thick tan head of foam resting on top of the rich onyx-colored liquid. The aroma immediately speaks of dark chocolate and dark malts. The gentle herbal nose of Perle hops compliments the darker notes, making the beer savory to the senses.
The taste continues with the intense Belgian dark chocolate gliding across the tongue; starting sweet up front but giving way to rich cocoa flavors at the back. Through it all, a subtle fruitiness from our special Belgian yeast gives the beer brightness otherwise foreign to a beer style normally associated with gray foggy skies.

The beer pours dark with a frothy, creamy head. Not a terribly strong aroma. The taste was mostly chocolaty malt, but there was some disappointment in that the malt is just about as malty as it is chocolaty, if that’s even the slightest bit comprehensible to anyone besides me. The mouthfeel was good; carbonation and aftertaste were both enjoyable. The beer really added up to more than the sum of its parts.

Faint yeasty nose with hints of raisins. Opaque black, thick firm tan head. Bitter dark chocolate swiftly turning to sour charcoal at midpalate and returning to a subdued nutella finish. Medium body. Fair complexity and good balance. Not as spectacular as its limited availablily implies. Cellar temp is a must to bring out the full complexity.

Bottle @ Pikkulintu, Helsinki, Finland. A chocolate stout which doesn’t really have that much chocolate in its taste or palate.

Opaque black pour that gives off a thick, creamy tan head. The aroma is milk chocolate, some coffee, vanilla and yeast. The flavor had much less chocolate that I was expecting. A bit chalky on the tongue. In many ways this is just a good, typical Stout.

Tap at Max’s. Black with a beige head. Aroma of cocoa powder and Hershey bar. Flavor of bitter chocolate and burnt espresso beans. Not too over the top.

Sampled from a bottle. Poured black with a medium dark brown head that dissipate to the edges. Aroma was full of malts with an undertone of dark bitter chocolate. Flavor was full of dark grain and bread with a growing very dark bitter chocolate note.

10th September 2008. A light stout - very light. Barely there toasted malt. Very light chocolate. A minerally finish. Very drinkable but not what was expected. Not that chocolately and not the sumptuos beer I was hoping for. Somewhat underwhelmed!
