(On tap during Zwanze Day/Funk Night @ barVolo, Sept 20, 2014) Pours clear dark gold with a huge white head and spotty lace. Aroma really driven by Pinot Noir, oak, vanilla, Brett over a sweet pale and pils malt base and to my surprise an herbal hop note. The palate is a funny beast, barrel overload. Sweet pale malts almost buried by tannic red wine and an overabundance of wood, along with lots of kinda sweaty Brett. The finish is fairly dry and lightly sour but very tannic and metallic, like blood (my girlfriend’s analogy but I agree!). Medium body, medium carb. Interesting but too much time in barrel I think, overwhelming not just the base beer but the final product itself. Maybe I would enjoy this more at a different time, I normally love Pinot and its barrel character and it was the 16th and final beer I tasted that day...
