Smellof hops, rum, toffee. Bronze colour, light brown head. Aroma of alcohol, hops, tar, rum, earth. Bitter, medium sweet. Mid-flat carbon.

Bottle shared by the Cotteridge Wines Crew towards the end of a legendary bus adventure on 06/07/13 - cheers fellas! Pours a clear dark amber with a decent sized beige head. Nose is dark toffee, dark fruits, sugars, light boozey aroma. Taste comprises dates, brown sugar, dark fruit, toffee fudge, hoppy backbone. Full bodied, fine carbonation, dry in the closure with some light hop bitterness and booze. Solid barley wine.

Bottle at Cotteridge Wines, Birmingham. Poured a clear a clear dark amber with a thin broken white head. The aroma is rich caramel leading to a thick oily medium bitter flavour with bags of liqourice and caramel in the finish.

Bottle at Cotteridge Wines: cheers guys for laying on a great spread of beer and food, golden pour with thin beige head, very sweet very sticky but very hop big grapefruit and citrus hops trying to peep their head above the sweet caramel action ABV is present but overall a pleasant drink.

650ml bottle. Hazy reddish amber colour with average, frothy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige-ochre head. Citrusy hop aroma, caramel malty background with hints of toffee, burnt caramel. Taste is initially bitter hoppy, citrusy, caramel malty background, hints of bitter almond, toffee, later less hoppy with intensening malty and bitter and burnt caramel malty notes; lasting bitter finish. Well hopped, almost easy to drink.

From a 1 Pt 6 Fl Oz bottle on 13/5/2013 (2012 vintage). Pours a cloudy dark brown with a medium to big head. Has a surprisingly subtle aroma of toffee, fruit and just a hint of alcohol. By comparison, the experience in the mouth is far more full on, and quite special. There’s lots of sweet toffee and caramel malt in the foreground, with some dark fruit (prunes and dates) as well. But it’s the hops that are the cornerstone here - a big resiny, lingering bitterness with a good dose of grapefruit keeps the sweet stuff in n check. It’s towards the syrupy end in texture and the carbonation is a little higher than normal for the style. Presents as a very big beer, yet I found myself able to down it with dangerous speed. A fabulous barley wine.

Pours dark copper with a large, slowly fading head.Hoppy aroma, but with a fair bit of malt noticeable underneath. Grapefruit, resinous hops, spicy notes, caramel, bready malt.Pretty hoppy aggressive flavours. Very sharp pine and grapefruit with accompanying massive bitterness alongside some bready malt. Thick syrupy body.

22 ounce bottle into snifter, 2011 vintage. Pours very hazy dark reddish brown color with a 1 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a thin cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big orange rind, grapefruit, orange zest, pine, caramel, toast, floral, grass, molasses, dark bread, light roast, and floral earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of malt and hop notes. Taste of big orange zest, grapefruit, pine, caramel, molasses, toast, floral, grass, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, and floral earthiness. Fair amount of pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of citrus zest, caramel, toast, molasses, pine resin, brown sugar, brown bread, light roast, and floral earthiness on the finish for a while. Incredible balance and complexity of hop and malt flavors; with a great malt/bitterness balance; and zero cloying flavors present after the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full bodied; with a creamy, slick, and lightly sticky mouthfeel that is very nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic barleywine! Great balance and complexity of malt and hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.
