This notoriously strong beer is a firm favourite in winter months, some call it liquid Christmas cake

Tasting note: This sweet malty winter ale has a port-like aroma with notes of citrus on the nose and dried fruit and cinnamon tastes create a warming effect on the tongue. Bitter sweet.

Bottle (as Titanic Christmas Ale - 7.4% ABV) at pre Xmas tasting, thanks to Leighton 21/12/12. Clear mid brown with a thin off white head that soon bades farewell and heads to the edge of the glass. Nose is toffee, touch of booze, wood, dark fruits, raisens. Taste follows, dark toffee, sugars, dark fruits, malt. Medium bodied with bite, smooth on the palate, soft carbonation. Not being a lover of the ubiqitous ’Christmas Ale’ I was pleasantly surprised by this one - not bad at all !

50cl bottle from Appellation Wines. Pours a lovely mahogany with a nicely proportioned head. Looks great! The nose has a hint of cheese, some old dusty cellar. The taste has malt, spice, honey and a dry malty finish. The palate has a medium body with a big malty texture and a dry malty finish. Overall, a nicely balanced and well made beer.

500ml brown bottle, best before end of Feb 2011, reviewed 30 Dec 2010. Poured into an ’Abbot Ale’ glass tankard. This a bottle conditioned beer, so it was poured carefully and slowly. Dark red in colour, clear and clean. On top a small off-white crown. Lambic, sour aroma with plums and sweet malts coming as the beer warmed. The taste was rich, Christmas pudding type flavours with all sorts of fruit coming into play. Yet that lambic sourness in the smell also had a huge impact on the taste and mouthfeel too. The combination of the richness and lambic feel made this an interesting and certainly different beer. When cold this beer was poor, but as it warmed it became better and better.

Cask, Dispensary, Liverpool. Murky brown colour with a thin lingering tan head. Aroma was dark fruit, sweet malt and spices. Similarly sweet, verging on cloying flavour, with notes of toffee, butterscotch, fruits and clove. Boozy finish with some bitterness. All a bit muddled.

500ml bottle at 7.4%. Pours a very dark brown with a medium head. Aroma is bready, nutmeg, other Christmas spice and a little coffee. Taste has spice and coffee to start. Bready finish with some coffee on the aftertaste.

Bottle from The Cave, as Titanic Christmas Ale, 7.6% ABV. A small fountain when opening. Hazy dark copper colour, huge off-white head. Nose is yeasty, spicy, candy sugar. Flavour is malty, sour fruits, spices, nutty, some tartness, slight alcoholic, sweet caramel. Fruity and sour finish. Medium bodied. Lots of things going on here, but not sure if balanced.

On tap at The Wellington in Birmingham, pours dark amber with an off-white head. Aroma of light brown sugar and toffee. Flavour is much more full-bodied than the nose suggests, with toffee, burnt caramel and earthy hops. Full-bodied palate - malt heavy initially, with a hop finish. Very nice.
