Dark in color but light in body, this black lager is one of our more sessionable offerings. Brewed with traditional German malt and hops, this perplexing beer offers a subtle roasty nose that gives way to refreshing pilsner flavors and a crisp, dry finish.

Pint at the Old Toad, Rochester - nearly black beer, with a slight ruby tint around the edges, and a creamy, tan head - roasty aroma, with hints of charred wood, burnt sugar, and black coffee - smooth, clean, medium bodied - strong roasty character, some cocoa, and light hints of berry sweetness - a touch of licorice - lightly bitter finish - schwarzbiers are woefully misunderstood - this rating should be higher.

Oh yes, oh yes, oh yes, on tap at the Bocktown right here in western PA! Very beer aroma in a nice way. Rootbeer color and a half inch head but not creamy, I say. Cool milder roasty flavors. Friendly and easy to like all right. A slight bitterness builds but it’s just enough personality to keep it from being over the top. Well mannered and fun. Overall quite good for an SN. Damp wet campfire charcoal finish.

On tap at The Rake, Borough Market. Wow this was a bit unexpected to see this here. Went and spoke to Richard and the brewer from Freeminer to get the low down. Very deep ruby with no real head. Smoked roasted malt aroma, like a schwarz, bit of dark toffee. Stunningly good. Just does the style perfectly. Lovely.

The color of the beer looks black at first but upon closer inspection it has brown hues, so its just really dark brown. It also pours with a small off-white head. The aroma is very lagered, meaning I get some very clean authentic German smells (best interpreted as "too clean"), and there is just some light roast and wet forest bark. Taste has some light coffee and roast and again well lagered with not residual sweetness. Dry short aftertaste. Nicely done but without any flair to stand out.

On tap @ San Diego Brewing brewpub. Pours dark and coffee like with tan head. The aroma is fruity fig like sweet with mild roasted malts and a hint of smoke, hmmmm. The taste is much the same with fig fruitiness, chocolate malts mixed with molasses, caramel and a hint of smoke as noted in the nose. Where’d that smoke come from?
