Dark in color but light in body, this black lager is one of our more sessionable offerings. Brewed with traditional German malt and hops, this perplexing beer offers a subtle roasty nose that gives way to refreshing pilsner flavors and a crisp, dry finish.

Growler from Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA. Pours a very dark brown color with a medium tan creamy head. Good head retention and a bit of lacing. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts and a nutty note. The taste is roasted malts, chocolate, bitter hops, and a faint bit of coffee and smoke. Thin-medium bodied.

Bottled@The 1st Vaasa CS/ES beer session (Thanks JS). Deep ambery brown colour, close to black, with mediumsized beige head. Aroma is roasted malts along with some slight toffee, caramel and mild grassy notes as well. Flavour is roasted malts, burnt wood, some toffee, caramel and mild dark dry fruity notes. Ends in a rather ashy way.

14th March 2008. On tap at the Rake. Very dark brown beer. Smooth start, almost creamy - leads to toasty malt and a dry very lightly bitter finish with fruit and effervescense.

Deep dark brown coloured body with a thinnish tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, bitter nuts, caramel, metal and a touch of fresh hops. Medium-bodied; Strong roasted malt flavours dominate the taste with a large amount of sugars and a subtle nutty finish. Aftertaste shows toffee and coffee with a little hop bitterness toward the end. Good complexity! Overall, a good beer - not my favourite Schwarz, but good to try of course! Even odder was that I found this American beer in London, instead of anywhere stateside. I sampled this pint on draught at the Rake in London, England on 10-March-2008.

Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm. Very dark brown, minimal head. Roasty chocolatey nose. Sweet with clean mouthfeel and fairly light body. Flavour of chocolate wrapped in paper. Finishes with faint bitterness. I dig the chocolate part, but the hard, clean mouthfeel makes it dull and lifeless.

(Draught at Oliver Twist, Stockholm, 30 July 2008) Black colour with frothy, beige head. Roasted, fruity nose with blueberries, coffee, chocolate, dark rye bread and hints of ashes. Malty, fruity taste with notes of coffee, blueberries and a fairly dry finish with a touch of citrussy hops. Nice beer, slightly fruitier than its German cousins.
