Birra Moretti La Rossa is a double malt beer produced using 100% high quality barley malt. This gives it a full, caramelised malt flavour and an intense aroma of roasted malt. Its distinctive amber colour originates from the type of malt used when brewing, a special malt which is dried and roasted.

Pours a dark amber with a nice off-white head. Aroma of malt, caramel, and brown sugar. Taste is sweet malt, caramel, and molasses. A bit too sweet, but still a decent Doppelbock.

On tap @ a local pub in Monfalcone. This is a clear nutty-caramelly colored one with a big off-white head. The aroma is mostly sweet caramel and clear nuts. Flavor wise I get lots of raisins! It's a bit out there on the sweet side with caramel but also a good bitterness in the finish. Tasty but a bit disappointing and thin texture with a average carbonation level. Ends of with a bit of alcohol in the aftertaste. 18.05.2012

Bottle poured into a shaker. Pours brown with about a finger of dark tan head. Aroma of caramel and coffee. Taste is lightly sweet. Caramel, fermented fruit and coffee. Medium bodied with a creamy texture. Lively carbonation and a long finish. Overall, very good. I’d really like to try one again sometime.

200ml plus 400ml at a pizzeria in Rome. Nice, brown-red body topped by large, beige head with a solid stand. No lacing. Modest, mid-sweet aroma of caramel and coffee. Flavoured with dark fruits, caramel malts and brown sugar, slightly roasted. Soft in the mouth. On the sweet side, but still rather nice and a fine partner with the pizza. Didn’t notice the alcohol (Roma, 29.03.2012).

Chevy Chase Wine and Beverages, DC 330ml ($2-3): Pours a ruby color with a quickly dissipating head. Aroma is of malty sweetness, with a hint of brandy. Taste is a little cloyingly sweet and the front and descends into an every so slightly bitter finish, although the sweetness lingers on into the aftertaste. Not a great doppelbock, but surprising that Birra Moretti makes this along with their more mainstream offerings.

Pours decent, nothing great, but the burnt orange hue is nice. Smells funky and European and super-malty. Eh. Shines, though, when you taste it; La Rossa is a caramel-and-toffee sweetbun of a beer, coupled with an alcohol-free semi-dry finish. Cookielike at its core, with a finish that lingers a little too long, cheapening the deep malt center. Feels good, smooth texture, not great but a nice option when all the other choices are Italian macro crap. (5/29/09)
