Birra Moretti La Rossa is a double malt beer produced using 100% high quality barley malt. This gives it a full, caramelised malt flavour and an intense aroma of roasted malt. Its distinctive amber colour originates from the type of malt used when brewing, a special malt which is dried and roasted.

Bottle. Can’t recall where from. Clear, dark copper colour. Thin, lasting, off white head. Fruity, toffee malts. Some vanilla pod. Taste is toffee sweet. A little, balancing, dry bitterness. Nice, smooth, creamy palate. Finishes mostly sweet, with a nad of bitterness. Very decent. Took me by surprise, this one.

This is what I used to drink before I discovered the myriad of really good Italian beers. I liked it because it was maltier than most, and a welcomed change from pale lagers. Nice color as well. But I’ve moved on.

Bottle from Tesco, consumed at home. Ruddy brown, clear-ish. Small tan head. Black cherry, basil, toast and chocolate malt aroma. Sweet and fruity taste with a heavy malty character. Full palate with plentiful carbonation. A well-crafted strong beer. Would I have this again? In a hot minute.

Nose is caramel, nuts slight coco. Taste is overpoweringly sweet, slight nut and caramel with the faintest smoke in the finish. Touch of metallic. Mouth feel is fine. The sweetness overpowers and drowns out all the interest.

Classic Italian, a dark Doppelbock with Vienna-like characteristics. Tasted in Venice in 2004. Light beige foam, colour a dark burgundy brown, darker than amber. Quite complex malty aroma, caramel, nuts, lightly toasted and even very faintly smoky accents; taste likewise, malty, sweetish, multi-layered, overall caramelly, very enjoyable with a clean, smooth finish.
