Founded in 1805 by Wilhelm Sester, the brewery had been located in Ehrenfeld since 1917. In 1928 the business was expanded to include another site. Initially mainly "Kristall" and pils as well as the so-called Kölsch Alt were produced there. At the height of the brewery in the 1970s, an annual output of over 20,000 hl was achieved. In 1993 the Sester descendants sold the trademark and brewing rights to Brau und Brunnen AG (today part of the Radeberger Group).

Clear pale golden colour, small frothy white head, mostly diminishing, light lacing. Aroma malts, grain, grass, bit of cheese. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, hops. Sweetbitter aftertaste, grassy and peppery notes, medium body, oily texture, soft carbonation, decent kölsch.

Bottle @ home. Clear golden color, average sized white head. Smell and taste are no different from most other (German) Kolsch: some malts, lightly bitter, light hop bitter, hayish. Average body and carbonation. Ok beer.

Bottle from Cologne Kiosk shop in Cologne. Pours clear and golden with the a small short lasting white head. Aroma more of malt and caramel than the other Kolsch I’ve had so far on this trip. Medium sweetness but also with a level of bitterness again not experienced in the others. Light-medium body, sticky texture, light carbonation. Finish has a bittersweet edge. Enjoyed this.

500ml bottle. Clear golden colour with average, frothy, fairly lasting, minimally lacing, white head. Expressionless, grainy and strawy aroma. Taste is bitter hoppy, slightly grassy, minimally strawy, a lemon dash. Nicely refreshing.

Helder lichtgeel bier met schuim. Smaak is bitter en licht zoetig. Blijft lang hangen. Erg goede Kölsch

0,5 l bottle. Pours clear golden in the 0,2 l Kölsch Stange. Big white short living head. Low sweet grainy on the nose. Taste more malty grainy than expected, slightly bitterness. Not bad.

Classic Kölsch with yellowish white, crackling, irregular but stable head and off-yellow blonde colour with pinkish hue, clear. Weak pale malts in the nose, hay, peppery hops, grains, young cheese, vanilla; dryish, cheesy, grainy taste, minerals, faint sourishness perhaps coming from the carbonation, light maltiness, subtle ’stings’ of hop bitter in the finish. Interesting Kölsch with a distinct personality compared with its peers.
