Founded in 1805 by Wilhelm Sester, the brewery had been located in Ehrenfeld since 1917. In 1928 the business was expanded to include another site. Initially mainly "Kristall" and pils as well as the so-called Kölsch Alt were produced there. At the height of the brewery in the 1970s, an annual output of over 20,000 hl was achieved. In 1993 the Sester descendants sold the trademark and brewing rights to Brau und Brunnen AG (today part of the Radeberger Group).

Classic Kölsch with yellowish white, crackling, irregular but stable head and off-yellow blonde colour with pinkish hue, clear. Weak pale malts in the nose, hay, peppery hops, grains, young cheese, vanilla; dryish, cheesy, grainy taste, minerals, faint sourishness perhaps coming from the carbonation, light maltiness, subtle ’stings’ of hop bitter in the finish. Interesting Kölsch with a distinct personality compared with its peers.

Pours a clear golden color, topped with more than generous white head and nice retention. Aroma is mild, slightly sweet and fruity and hoppy. The taste is nicely enjoyable, sweet and slightly bittery in the end. Smooth, nice and enjoyable.

The 50cl bottle pours out crystal clear gold with a short lived slightly loose head of foam. The aroma offers up some mild floral to spicy hops and a bit of malt sweetness. The taste delivers a pleasing floral to spicy hoppiness to slightly lime hop bitterness mixed with just a touch of hop flavor as sweet malts fill in the gaps to midway. Into the finish it picks up a bit of breadiness and some sweet estery lagery fruitiness. This is a bit on the sweet side but pretty good compared to attempts at this style I’ve had in the States.

catch up rating from notes: 2011: Bottle picked up on a trip through Köln. The real deal from Köln, brewed within the city limits. That said, its quite average at best. Nothing stands out, no major knocks against it. Right on style. enough said.

Second Kolsch of the evening: half litre bottle best before Oct 2012, poured into my ’Gaffel Kolsch’ glass three times. Looks fine: golden, clean and clear, the head tried to stay unlike most Kolsch, who’s toppings leave almost straight away. Yeasty and hoppy in the aroma: makes a change to smell anything from a Kolsch. Nice bitter hop kick to this compared to the usual slightly sweeter Kolsch brews. Prefered this to the highly rated Reissdorf, which was the beer before this. I know this is a cheap supermarket beer but I liked it.
