On tap at Vetter's, Alt Brauhaus Heidelberg, Saturday 26th March 2019, a night stopover en route to our new home in Attenkirchen, Bavaria. Pours dark brown with just a slim off white head. Rich, sweet and sticky. Molasses rule here, this is a very strong beer. I like it but it's a one trick pony and the trick has been done before and better by others

Tap at the brewpub. Strangely enough, the waiter told me that this is the helles, but boiled for 9 hours! Reddish brown, clear and flat. Nose is raisins, cocoa syrup, dried prune, and big time treacle. Very sweet, treacle, some burnt sugar, raisin. Massive dried fruits. Aged taste with some oxidation, port-like (Found out that is actually isn’t aged but tasted like it was). Enjoyable.

Bottle, pours a hazy orange with a small off-white head. Aroma brings out toasted nuts, light caramel and bready malt. Flavour is very nutty, with toasted nuts, bready malt and light caramel. Fairly dry and toasted, with a nutty finish. Nice stuff.

Sampled on draft from the Vetter in Heidelberg at the suggestion of a tour guide. I had the small glass that the pourer repeatedly told me was all he could recommend as a serving, too potent. Oh ye of little faith. Delivered as a dark, almost black liquid, it had no head to speak of. I could smell dark fruit. The taste was heavy malt, raisin, caramel and an almost overpowering sweetness. The alcohol was evident but not strident. And then I had to depart promptly. More than just a sample would be preferred if I ever get to drink again.

Flip top bottle thanks to Rich. Dark amber with fast subsiding head. Sweet molasses aroma, sweet malts, minor roast grains. Taste ratchets up the sweetness, normal doppelbock flavors, but extra sweet. Sweetness masks the higher ABV.
