The name Schild Brau essentially means “shield Beer” in German. The Schild Brau Amber is our flagship beer crafted the same as the special beers of Munich in the Vienna Lager category. Our beer uses the same malts to attain a perfect balance between malty sweetness and a firm bitterness. This beer has been with Millstream since we opened our doors in 1985. The repeated awards that we have received for this beer only confirms why many people consider this beer to be synonymous with Millstream Brewery at its best.

Thanks to heemer77 for bringing the sampler of Millstreams to TN! This one starts with a large creamy head on a hazy, medium orange amber brew. Light malt aroma with a whiff of hop perfume in the back. Lightly sweet with a good malt flavor. Well done V/O/M.

2004 bottle compliments of MilkmanDan. Deep red color, clear and filtered, no head. Toffee aroma, coppery and yeasty. Starts out very sour and yeasty, light caramel. Medium and made with a good amount of water but yet not ridiculously thin. Some light sweetness on the end. Surprisingly pretty good and reminiscent of an alt with all of the yeast copper and sweetness in the middle. It works as a marzen though it’s a sweet version of one, with not as much graininess. Didnt find much in the way of spicy hops.

Acquired via trade. The beer is a dark copper/amber color with a thin beige head that dissipated rather quickly. Very thin lacing. Lightly malty aroma, with a hint of nuts. Medium-bodied with a flavor somewhere between a Marzen and a regular Amber. There is a tartness under the malt and caramel that made the character seem a little off. However it was still fairly easy to drink. The finish is alternatingly fruity and malty. Overall not an exceptional beer but it is smooth with a nice taste.

Bottled. Okay, call me prejudiced because I’m from Iowa, which doesn’t have a major brewing scene, but this is one of the best “ambers” I‘ve had. Has a nice malty smell and pours a thick brownish head over an excellent coppery, bubbly body. There's a big caramel and brown sugar maltiness, with the right balance of German hops to keep it from getting too cloying. Won a Bronze at GABF, where it competed as a Vienna, and at the North American Brewers Association where it competed as a Mârzen. Go figure. Just a short detour off I-80 at the Colonies.
