Part of my 2013 backlog. Colour is almost black with a thin off white head. The aroma has toasted malt and coffee. the flavour has roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee and a caramel sweetness.

Near-black, red-tinged beer with a strong, smoky chocolate aroma and not much head. Flavour is milder than you’d think from the smell, with an initial fruit tanginess settling down into light, malty chocolate. Leaves a pleasant smoky aftertaste and a sort of airy chocolatey-ness.

500ml bottle from Beers of Europe. Pours black, no head. Aromas of dark chocolate, liquorice and coffee. Taste is roasted coffee, treacle. Light body, thin texture. Concur this is more like a stout.

500ml Bottle: BBD end of Jan 15. Poured into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 7th Mar 14. Lovely full head of tanned foam on top of a truly black body. Sadly the head fell away to a wisp and collar as I wrote this! Malty notes hit the nose, roasted and toasted notes with a semi-sweet hint or two. Mild coffee and chocolate esters carry through into the taste. This isn’t a powerful or strong tasting brew, it is however subtle with an underlying depth of flavours. Those aforementioned coffee and chocolate flavours blending nicely to produce a pleasant and interesting brew. A mild bitter finish prevents the beer becoming too ’malty’ or sweet and gives a decent balance overall. Not too sure it’s really a mild in the true sense of the style though, more like a Stout/Porter.

Cask at the Watford Beer Festival 2013. Poured an attractive black with a tight tan head. Aroma of coffee ice cream, wet grass and dark fruit. Initial dark malt flavour, which is quickly replaced by sweet, cold coffee grouts which then builds and becomes the dominant flavour. I hate sweetened coffee, so not particularly likely that I would care this...
