Cask at Hops, Crewe. Pours a dark (almost very dark) reddish-brown with minimal cream head and good lacing. Malts to the fore in the aroma, plus traces of honey and herbs. In the mouth it is quite sweet but with a little underlying bitterness and a decidedly watery texture. Flavour is smokey malts and dark fruits with hints of humbug sweets and hops coming through later. Slight dryness in the finish. This is reasonable – if a bit thin.

Cask @ Ale Emporium, Preston. Very dark with a small creamy off-white head. Has a fairly full roasted malt aroma and taste subdued only by its slightly weak texture, but this does not take away much from the ale that’s fairly tasty in the main. Retried at the Bradford Beer Festival ale number 15 of the 2025 edition for me.
