Telegraph's California Ale is their flagship beer and is their interpretation of the unique ales that were commonly brewed up and down the West Coast in the 19th century. It is an unfiltered medium-bodied beer, with a rich amber color and a rocky, white head. The beer is crafted using domestic American ingredients and fermented with a unique yeast strain that accentuates the hoppy spiciness, while also imparting fruity and subtly tart flavors. The aromas are spicy and earthy, reminiscent of the rich agricultural valleys surrounding Santa Barbara.

Bottle from South Bay Drug; corked and caged. Clear amber color with a slight white head. Aroma is somewhat caramel malt with mild fruit and a touch of yeast or sour. Near medium body with carbonation that is noticeable, but not spritzy. There are light fruity notes, possibly a bit of citrous zest. The malt sweetness is mild, everpresent, but not excessive. Pleasant, suggestive of a lighter Belgian ale.

On tap at Father’s Office. Not what I was expecting at all (was expecting a malty and fruity California Common ala Anchor Steam on sterroids). Pours with a small, off-white head covering a clear amber brown body. Slightly sour and earthy aroma with a bit of oak and prunes aswell. Tastee has some strong leather nots as well as a bit of barnyard, tobacco, spiceyness. Very salty and herbal. A bit fizzy on the mouthfeel. Was not expecting them to use the yeast that was used here.

Bright, dark, golden-amber. Lightly spicy aroma with a footy yeast note. Spicy, with light caramel, a hint of clean tartness late. Crazy beer - lots of nuance. A bit of an odd duck but I like it.

750ml bottle from Sandy’s San Luis Obispo; nose of spices, a little funk, and some fruitiness; lightly hazed copper-orange with a 3" head, that lasts for 10 minutes and laces pretty thickly as it recedes; flavor of light pumpkin pie (pumpkin and nutmeg), some tartnes, but not very heavy, caramel, and a little sweetness. as it warms the tarty funkiness disappears and it tastes more like a Cal Common with its fruitiness and less like a saison or Belgian ale. Much better than their Porter!
