A cult, complex & wholesome Kentish ale that melds rich, melodious notes of toffee and dark fruit with a piquant, peppery hop profile leading to a dry, mineral-rich finish.

Trivia: The beer takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s.

Classic ESB from England’s oldest active brewery, named after old signs depicting a bishop’s finger. Creamy head on a bronzed amber-coloured robe, flowery and caramelly aroma with the characteristic diacetyl (buttermilk) accent only present in the cask-conditioned version. Well-balanced, malty taste, supple mouthfeel, dried fruits, finishing mildly hoppy, very thirst-quenching.

Cask at a Canterbury pub. Appearance is dark chestnut brown, with quite a thick and foamy head. Aromas of malt, hoppiness, dark fruit hints. Taste is malty, bitter, raisin, hints of caramel and chocolate, a smooth finish. Quite good.

Not too apparent in the aroma, but this taste is certainly of roasted malts. Golden dark in colour.

Full pint, Swedish (?) cask ,hand-pulled at Bishops Arms Kiruna. Golden-brown body with a tiny, white head sitting atop. Rather prominent aroma of roasted dark caramel. Bready malts and dark caramel in flavour with dark fruits beneath. Finish off with a nice roasted bitterness. Pleasant and a good partner to the pork plate, 28.04.2012.

Cask @ The Old Mill, Brodie (advertised at 4.7% abv)
Chestnut brown..clear..off white frothy head....good lacing
Aroma - caramel malts...some yeast...hint of bitter hops...not much on the nose
Taste - light carmael malts...bitter fruity hops..some earthy hops...light toffee..light minerals...little bit low in flavour
Palate - soft carb...nice slightly biting bitterness...finish as main flaovur with flinty minerals.
Overall - Well made bitter but I recall there was considerably more flavour when I last had it a while back. Advertised at 4.7% - perhaps they have actually reduced the abv?

Warning! Early amateur rating! On tap at the Sun Inn, Kelvedon. AKA Nuns Delight! Mild dark ale, malty, not too sweet but not that bitter either. Drinkable.
