A cult, complex & wholesome Kentish ale that melds rich, melodious notes of toffee and dark fruit with a piquant, peppery hop profile leading to a dry, mineral-rich finish.
Trivia: The beer takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s.

Cask at the Bishops Finger, Smithfield. Pours amber with a lasting semi-firm off white head. Aroma of malt, toffee, fruit, hop and flowers. Moderate sweetness, medium bitterness. Medium to full bodied, creamy texture, soft carbonation. An SN beer which has stood the test of time - one of their best.

Pint of cask in the Bishops Finger in Smithfield. An appealing dark brown in the glass and a minimal head, but plenty of lacing. The taste was big malt, bitter hops and a kick of alcohol; everything that you would expect in an English ESB. It was perfectly kept and gorgeous to drink and was so good that we had another one. An ideal beer for the time of year and to toast the season with my brother.

Cask at The Star Inn, Guildford. Low key fruity aroma. Dark brown. Decent creamy off-white head. Sweet with a touch of berry sourness. However pretty bland. Thin-medium bodied. Soft bodied and carbonated. Abrupt finish. Slips down easily enough but a bit of a non-event.

Handpump at Tree Folks in Rome-Italy. Pours a caramel amber brigh color, semi clear. Creamy off-white foam. Nose: peanuts, dry grass. Mouth: super nutty, rich maltiness, cherry skin, velvety bitter final almost unpredictable. So tasty! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On cask at the Standing Order. Appearance - deep amber with a decent head. Nose - toffee maybe some lime. Taste - caramel going into lime marmalade. Biscuity background. Palate - medium bodied with a creamy yet tangy texture and a long dry finish, some malt some hops Overall - good but ESB can be and should be more complex than this.
