A cult, complex & wholesome Kentish ale that melds rich, melodious notes of toffee and dark fruit with a piquant, peppery hop profile leading to a dry, mineral-rich finish.

Trivia: The beer takes its name from the finger-shaped signposts which pointed pilgrims on their way to the tomb of Thomas a Becket in Canterbury and was the first strong ale to be brewed by Shepherd Neame after malt rationing was eased in the late 1950s.

Cask at Rickmansworth W’Spoons. An amber coloured pour with a small fluffy white head. Aroma is quite sweet and fruity. Tastes of caramel, dark fruit, a bit sweet, slightly bitter. Quite pleasant but I am not really a fan of Shepherd Neames beers generally.

Tap at Charlie’s. Poured a dark amber with an off-white head. Odd aroma of malts and carmel. Flavor doesn’t do anything for me, quite unpleasant if anything. This beer is not for me.

Cask at the Wharf, Aalborg. It pours a clear, slightly dark golden body with a nice finger-thick off-white head leaving lacings. Malty nose with caramel and a subtle piney and citrusy hop print. The flavor presents piney, orangey hops on a malty background with a good dash of caramel. Some orange-peel bitterness blend in, leading to a bitter, piney finish. Medium to full body, smooth and gentle. A quite dry one, but über-quaffable, the kind you could enjoy all-night without getting very bored. (090205)
