An unusual beer, it is neither a porter nor a stout, but a black ale. It is a proper English pale with the addition of heavily roasted grains. Only English hops are used, some of them later in the boil to leave behind essential oils and hop aroma. This beer tests the drinkers senses – the eyes are saying it’s heavy, the mouth says it’s light, perhaps sometimes dangerously so….

Bottle online from Beers Of Europe. Pours a very very dark chestnut brown colour with a medium sized thick creamy beige head. Aromas of caramel, nuts, chocolate and roasted malts. Taste has dark fruits, caramel, chocolate, nuts, brown bread, roasted malts and some ashy notes on the finish. Full body, low carbonation and smooth mouthfeel. Nice old fashioned winter beer.

Bottle 50cl. @home poured into a pint glass. Clear medium amber colour, good creamy off-white head, half-way lasting, good lacing. Aroma roasted malts, dark bread, light chocolate, liquorice, hint of smoke. Taste medium sweet and bitter, malty, roast, dark chocolate, liquorice, some tar, light retronasal smoke. Medium body, oily texture, average carbonation, dry sweetbitter aftertaste, lingering roastiness, smooth and tasty, easy to drink, enjoyed this one, good!

Bottle at home. Dark brown/black coloured with golden bubbly head. Quite sticky looking. Aroma is roasted malt, slightly herbal, bit creamy. Taste has a touch of smoke, toffee, chocolate, some liquorice and lots of roastiness again.Touch of bitterness with the sweetness at the end. Much better than I thought it was going to be. Medium bodied and pretty nice. --- Beer merged from original tick of Bad King John on 09 Sep 2019 at 16:06 - Score: Appearance - 6 | Aroma - 8 | Flavor - 8 | Texture - 6 | Overall - 7.
