A stout like no other. The antithesis of bitter Irish stouts, this is creamy, smooth with underlying chocolate notes imparted by generous amounts of roasted malts and oats. Pours with a dark body and ivory head. It’s a tall, dark handsome pint.

Cask at the Maypole, Cambridge. Dark brown with a big creamy tan head. That’s how it’s done. Roast coffee, elderberries, brambles in the scent. Simple but balanced bittersweet taste. The mouthfeel is unfortunately incredibly weak, which spoils the whole package that little bit. Very very good of course, but not among the best of beers from this underrated brewery.

Black with soapy head. Thin, watery body. Has a light roast and a light fruitiness. Not much to this one.

Cask. Black appearance with a one finger very light brown head. Aroma has a bit of dark fruit, liquorice and dark malts. Taste is roasty malt, coffee bitterness, cocoa, liquorice, dark fruit hints, and caramel in the finish. A good stout.

On cask @ SIBA BeerX - Deep dark body (lights were dimmed at the time, so no idea what hue it was), looks like a thin beige top. Nose is sweet chocolate and roast nuts, the taste however is watery and very bland. Shame really, very thin effort.

Cask @ Old Gate, Hebden Bridge. Black with an off-white creamy head and a mild roasted aroma. It’s more like a porter in taste with a malt-hop character.
