500ml bottle [happily not a wrecked bottle from Grumbo - thank you!]. Almost black colour with weak ruby glimmer and small, creamy, half-way lasting, minimally lacing, beige to tan head. Chocolately, dark malty aroma, some roast, a touch of coffee, celery overtones. Taste is bitter, roasty dark malty and slightly bitter hoppy, hints of cold coffee, a touch of celery.

Bottle at Cobbetts, Dorking. Pours black with virtually no head. Aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, light coffee and dark fruits. Medium plus sweetness, light to moderate roasted bitterness. Medium body, oily texture, soft to flat carbonation. Chocolate finish.

Bottle @ Cobbetts, Dorking. Black with a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet, roasted malt and caramel. Flavor is medium sweet and moderate bitter. Sweet and roasted moderate bitter finish. 140218

Cask at Prince of Wales, Farnborough. Light malt aroma. Oil slick black, more cola like in the light. Crescent moon of a beige head. Slightly sour with a wide sweet streak. Sugar, treacle, berries, but all understated. Medium bodied, if somewhat watery. Softness. Short finish. Easy drinking. Didn’t really get any bitterness. An overly polite porter.

Cask at The Claret. It pours dark ruby with a small beige. The aroma is toasty, roasted malt, wood, cardboard, rye bread, cocoa and cake. The taste bitter, roasted malt, charred wood, liquorice, treacle, fruit cake, cocoa and coffee with a dry, toasty finish. MediuM body and soft carbonation. Decent porter.
