From a trade on BA. It pours an almost completely black but really dark brown with almost no head. Aroma is strong with dark dirt and soil covered alcoholic raisin. A very Scottish BW in that ’soil" aspect and there is a nice almost roasty muddy leaves aspect. Strong and fumy. Very alcoholic prune in the flavor still very Scottish with a brown sugar aftertaste. Lots of alcohol still, but its very muddy and dark. Perfect for a Scottish BW.

Bottle. A clear, brown beer with a nice, beige head. Malty nose with lots of dried fruits as well as chocolate and some coffee. Sweet and malty flavor with chocolate and coffee, as well as a touch of alcohol. Full-bodied and sweetish. Short finish with malty sweetness, some chocolate and coffee. It’s a nice beer, but it lacks something. It should either have more hops, or it should have more of everything. Still, I would like to have it again. Rating: 6-4-7-4-14-3.5. 081108
Bottle. A clear, glowingly dark amber beer with a finger-thick beige head. Some roasted hints in the aroma, with dried fruits, caramel and a whiff of coffee. Quite sweet on the palate, full-bodied and soft, with dried fruits, caramel and some roasted, coffee-ish hints. Some bitterness towards the lasting end. Appropriate levels I guess, but there’s room for more. Certainly a lovely beer. 111209

330ml bottle, 2007 vintage, picked up at Cornelius in Edinburgh. Nearly black as coal, some russet highlights. Off-white, fading head. Nice lacework on the glass. Black malty aroma with a nice roastiness to it. Bittersweet taste of liquorice and dark malts. Warming alcohol, none distractive to the texture. Very likeable stuff, but maybe slightly one-dimensional [26.10.2008].

2007 Bottle thanks to bu11zeye. Pours with hardly any real heead, and clear dark brown body. Aroma of grapes, must, cranberries, casis and caramel. Taste is berries malt and sugar. Very well hidden alcohol. Creamy mouthfeel and light bubbles.

Bottle, Ale Cellar, Darlington. Poured a dark reddy brown with a tan head which disappeared to nothing. Aroma was malty with spices, dark fruit and chocolate jostling for posession;and the flavour was subtly sweet and shared plenty of these components with a pleasantly warming alco-buzz. Rich and somewhat vinous. Definitely one to savour. A worthy brew to bring up my quadruple century !

Bottle at Winking Lizard. Dark cola-brown color with a medium thin ivory white head that dissipates slowly. Latticework lacing on the glass. The aroma has some smoke in the background, punctuated by pitted fruits and chocolate malt. Rich body with flavors of plum, figs, malt and molasses. The finish is sweet and chewy with a caramel malt and raisin aftertaste. Very interesting and enjoyable overall.
