A Scottish stout with a wonderful rich dark colour. A smooth full bodied beer with subtle bitterness giving way to late sweetness and underlying roast barley hints.

Gravity cask from the Brewery Bar, third day at GBBF 09. Wholesome black appearance with a small beige head. Smoky malts to the nose. Liquorice and coffee from the dark malts, with tasty hints of dark berries and dark, mid-bitter fruits. Smooth on the swallow. Well made and pleasant to drink (Earls Court, 06.08.2009).

Cask@GBBF2009. Pitch black colour, small brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, liquorice and some slight dark fruits. Flavour is quite much the same. Dark fruits, fudge and coffee along with some slight roasted notes dominate the quite pleasant aftertaste.

Cask-conditioned at the Hillgrove Porter Stores, Bristol 31/1/09. Near black in colour with a creamy tan head. Aroma of liquorice, caramel, and dried fruit. Flavour was also sweet, with some prunes, blackcurrants, more liquorice and and long dry finish. Very enjoyable.

Cask gravity at Ealing BF 2008. Black with thin tan head. Bit of liquorice on aroma. Thick and syrupy in mouth, some coffee and choc, but this dry liquorice comes through. Not great for me. 635310 2.7/5.0 Re-rate Founty Hotel Ashford. First pint out of the barrel and glorious. Beautiful roast aroma with a touch of bonfire. Full in mouth then this juicy blackcurrant and blackberry finish. Really good.

On draught at the Halfway House: Literally black, small foamy layer, caramelly, fruity nose with traces of Port and almonds, a bit like a liquid X-mas cake; medium-bodied, smooth MF, moderate sweet-bitter flavour; long-lasting sweet finish, that becomes later more bitter and roastmalty. Yeah, a fine brew......
