We’ve given our traditionally brewed Bavarian-style lightly golden lager a slight twist with new juicy German hops this time around.

From tap at Market porter. Pours clear and yellow with a small dense white head. Light cornish and bitter aroma. Flavour is light citric and bitter. Citric and bitter finish. Not a good helles compared to the german rolemodels.

Half hellesbier served comfortably chilled from keg. Cloudy, straw coloured body. Thin, but lasting white head. Firm lacing on the glass. Grainy smell with hints of late apples. The taste displays a malted wheat profile supported by sweet fruits and herbal notes. Alright mouthfeel, but rather too much on the sweet side. As a partner to vegetarian curry (Dove Street Inn, Ipswich 04.05.2008).

Small white head. Yellow body. Light rubbery malty aroma. Dry grassy floral hoppy taste with malty straw notes. Some residual sweetness in the background. Light, refreshing. No real aftertaste. For a light summer beer, this is excellent. (0.5pt draft at the Greenwich Union.)

[Draught at White Horse, London] Clear golden, no head. Sweetish and fruity, clean and fizzy. No hops, no bitterness, the body isn’t firm enoug by far. More commercial lager than helles, I’m afraid.

(Draught at Market Porter, Borough, London, 23 July). Colour is golden yellow, almost no head, too much carbonation (When will they learn how to pour a lager with a good head in England?). Nose is malty with a floral hoppy aroma. Taste is malty and bready with a light but distinct flowery hoppiness in the finish. Better than most English lagers, but still some way to go to reach the best Germans.
