FULL, MELLOW, SMOOTH.
Modern recreation of a medieval recipe to give a glimpse into the kind of beers around in the Bard’s time. Hops were starting to be increasingly used by brewers during Shakespeare’s time (the first plantings in England were some forty years before his birth), but used sparingly, as in this recipe.
One of three beers first brewed for the Bristol Shakespeare Festival 5-21 July 2013.
What’s in it?
Maris Otter, Smoked, Rye, Brown, Oat malts from Warminster Maltings.
Challenger (UK) whole hops from Charles Faram of Malvern.

On gravity at the Looking Glass, Bristol 4/7/2013. Chestnut with a decent, off-white head. Sweetish, malt brew, with some berry fruits, earthy malts and decent, bitter finish with a hint of roastiness. Good.
