This beer is a "Hvidtøl". That's a Danish type of household beer, low fermented and of medium gravity. It's a special kind of beer popular around christmas, with a low amount of alcohol (max 2.25%).

33 cL bottle. Pours dark brown with an orange hue and a dense chocolate brown head. Sweet caramel and somewhat fruity aroma. Sweet flavour, quite sugarish with a note of canesugar. Has a soft caramel note. Raisins and plum fruit and sweetness towards the finish. One of the weaker hvidtoel.

330ml bottle. Dark golden body with a white head. Aroma is like some kind of candy/caramel with some malt. Flavor is surprisingly sweet. More like a soft drink with lots of sugar and malt. This Danish hvidtøl are really confusing me. Not possible to drink one bottle alone. I did try it together with some rice pudding, not to bad actually.

Bottled. Dark brown, with a small, tan head. Prunes, sugar, caramel and a weak fruityness in the aroma. The flavor has lots of sugar in it, with caramel, fruits and some roasted notes. Sticky mouthfeel and a sweet finish. I like looking at the Danish hvidtøls, I like smelling them, but then there’s too much sugar, but an interesting style it is. (060623)

(Bottle 33 cl) Very dark brown with a creamy, brownish head. This has added licorice, not that it shines through in the flavour though - but perhaps it adds to the colour. Malty and caramellish, but unfortunately very, very sweet - cloyingly sweet - pity. 070200

You can’t discuss "hvidtøl" with Danes - they instantly get sentimental, and start blabbering (with tears in their eyes) about the lovely Christmases of their childhood, when they were allowed to taste hvidtøl, with the gigantic alcohol content of 1.7%. Why it is called "hvidtøl" (= "white beer") I don’t know - it’s dark ruby, like a porter. Pours with little to no head. No aroma to speak of, just a faint whiff of malts. Flavour is very sweet, molasses, liquorice and malts, but not entirely undrinkable (after all, I finished the bottle). Not to be confused with a Norwegian Juleøl. This IS a beer for kids. Ah, hvidtøl and rice pudding; oh MAMAAA, I love you SOOOO!

Dark red/brown. Even though it's sweet and thin, it's the best of its kind because it actually has some malt aroma.

A red brown beer with almost no head. It has the aroma of the liqurice which it is brewed on. The flavor is very sweet and that of liqurice - it has no bitternes what so ever. It is very nice and refreshing to drink with very sweet food. But if you drink too much the sweetnes will become too much.
