Cask at Great Western, Wolverhampton I can’t believe I’ve not rated this before ! Nose is unremarkable – just some hints of porridge. Pours a rich ruby brown with a small cream head, and good lacing. Taste is a bittersweet conglomerate that is hard to define. More and more flavours come to the fore as it progresses through the mouth. Hazelnuts, liquorice, blackcurrant, raisins, figs, all with a full-bodied malty base to them. A wonderfully complex beer – the classic strong mild that all others (ought to) seek to emulate. It doesn’t get much better than this.
