A satisfying, full-flavoured black brew with a good balance of malt, roast and fruit. Bittersweet flavours carry through to a dry finish.

9th April 2015: gravity pour at the Isle of Man CAMRA beer festival. Very dark: black even, with a beige head. Malts rule the roost here, some dark chocolate and coffee notes in both the nose and taste. Fairly dry palate with a liquorice flavour arriving late and behind the other aforementioned malty flavours.

Cask at the Pembury Tavern, 03/01/15. Black with moderate tan spotting and edgework. Nose is light roast, herbal strokes, biscuit, toffee, light coffee strains. Taste comprises light chocolate, charr, dark fruits, spice. Medium bodied, limited carbonation, semi drying close. Not the greatest condition, a little flat, their own pub - no excuses!

Cask at Devonshire Arms, Cambridge. How terribly black. Very little head, but thatโs ok. This is beautiful. Salt liquorice, cough drop, chocolate malt aroma. Lovely sweet taste, a bit cloying although forgivable in the overall context. Thin to medium body. A very well made stout.

Cask @ Dirty Dicks, Halifax. Practically black with a creamy off-white head. Crisp and refreshing for a stout with a small roasted malt aroma and taste.
