This is the second time I’ve had this beer and the second time I believe its pretty over rated.
The date I see is a best before 1/18/2018 stamped on the back of the bottle.
I poured this into a chalice.
The appearance was a decent looking dark color with a half finger white foamy head that rises a tad and eventually lowers leaving a decent coating of a lacing gracing the sides of the glass.
The smell was once again just like the last time, too vinous, with some light plums and Belgian spices.
The taste was sweet but vinous over taking the Belgian spices that wanted to come out but never did. There was a vinous-like plum sweet aftertaste with a long dry finish.
On the palate, it sat about a medium with a pummeling dry-ing like effect putting my tongue into submission. The carbonation is decent for the style and to me. Its vinous and harsh and dry.
Overall, Belgian Strong ale, well, I guess it is, but there’s too much vinous qualities in this one. This is the second time I’ve had this and probably the last time.

On tap at the hollywood gardens. Odd mild perfumy aroma. Yes, first taste is strong and spicey. However, you would never think this stuff was near 11%, way to civilized for that. Yes, hides alky well. Not much co2 and finish is quite medicinal. I think I’m getting dizzy half way thru this glass.

Very easy to drink, or should I say dangerously easy to drink. No booze burn which isn’t easy when your over double digits abv. Went extremely well with the spicy Indian dish for dinner, and used their recommendation for an after dinner drink. Dark fruit, mulled wine flavor, nice easy carbonation, smooth like velvet.

(750mL from the LCBO, aged 1 year) Pours a very deep brown with mahogany highlights, like a strong cup of coffee, with a big pale tan head of fine bubbles, lots of lace. Aroma is dark fruit (seems figgy), dark candy sugar, very bready yeast, a bit of cherry note and maybe slight toast in there too. On the palate there is dark grape juice, candy sugar, some other misc. dark fruit character, slightly toasty/nutty but not very much. Yeast character throughout the sip. There is some currant/grape character in the middle and a definite dry/bitter character to the finish with persistent yeast/fruit. There is decent concentration of flavour, but it’s not shockingly intense. There is a fair amount of alcohol warmth in the finish, but probably not enough to match the ABV. The palate is medium full and would be slightly sticky without the high, prickly carbonation. I like this, it’s a good Belgian strong dark, but maybe just lacks the complexity to kick it into that top rank.

Refrigerated corked and capped 75 cl brown bottle poured into a trappist glass. Pours dark brown with chestnut brown highlights with small beige head. Aroma dark candy sugar, low/medium carbonation, very little lacing, and medium body. Taste is dark candy sugar, some dark fruit, and hint of alcohol.

Bottle - Vintage 2011 - Raisin, dark sugars and lots of yeast. Cloudy jet brown with a beige full head. Raisin, fig, dark molasses a little alcohol. Well balanced and very nice, alcohol is in check.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass, best before 11/15/2016. Pours fairly crystal clear dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy khaki head with incredible retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lasts. Nice dense soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a ton of streaming carbonation retaining the thick head. Aromas of big raisin, prune, fig, plum, apple, pear, molasses, toast, dark candi sugar, bread, clove, light pepper, bubblegum, and yeast earthiness. Damn nice aromas with great balance and complexity of yeast ester notes with a good dark malt balance; and good strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, fig, plum, pear, molasses, toast, clove, pepper, bubblegum, dark bread, chocolate, dark candi sugar, and yeast earthiness. Slight fruity tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of light and dark fruits, molasses, dark candi sugar, toast, dark bread, clove, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a while. Fantastic complexity and balance of fruity ester flavors with a big dark malt backbone; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a slick, creamy, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a slight warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a fantastic Belgian strong dark ale. Great complexity and balance of fruity ester and malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the gravity. A highly enjoyable offering as expected.
