Bottle from Gambrinus. Pours a deep brown to black with no head. Huge maple syrup nose that hits hard. Toasted brown sugar, cacao nib, light roasted malt, vanilla, charred oak and a touch of booze as it warms up to room temperature. Smooth and silky on the palate. Sweet definitely, but not cloying. Tons of brown sugar and roasted malt on the palate. The base beer really shines as it gets to around room temp. Maple and just a tad warming on the finish. 12% abv is completely hidden. My favorite Jesus variant at this point. I imagine this is what CBS must be like.

One of several ’Jesus stouts’ by Evil Twin, this one aged on maple syrup barrels. Thin, pale beige, quickly dissolving head retaining as a narrow moussy rim, black robe with hazy dark bronze edges. Intense bouquet of chocolate liqueur, maple syrup, cocoa, caramel sauce, candied dates, treacle, vanilla, wet wood, port, glue, coffee, dried banana, rum. Intense but refined candied sweetness on the tip of the tongue, candied banana, raisin, marmelade, some very light blackberryish sourishness hidden underneath, light umami touch; soft carbo, very thick, ’fat’ and oily, creamy mouthfeel. The initial sweetness stretches out into a general maple syrup sweetness that carries on till deep into the finish, over a thick layer of caramelly, very chocolatey and eventually toasted malt bittersweetness, developing a soft roasted coffee bitterness in the end; lovely vanilla and chocolate notes adorn the finish, along with spicy hops and a peppery, very pronounced yet still not astringent, white rum-like alcohol glow. The sweetness keeps sticking a bit, but with this massive mouthfeel and the alcohol dryness in the end, this doesn’t even bother me. Not quite as intense and refined as Founders’ CBS perhaps, the only other maple syrup stout I know of, but an utterly delicious beer in all its aspects.

Tastes of maple syrup, caramel, roasted coffee, dark chocolate, a hint of dark fruit. Full body with a dry finish. Alcohol is well masked. Lots of whiskey on the nose but nicely balanced on the taste.
