Deep dark brown coloured body with a nice, three to four centimetre tall light brown head that stays afloat for a while and fades very slowly. Aroma of brown sugar, caramel, light toffee, toasted malt, oak, a dose of grain, a little dose of stone fruits, much more pitted fruits, but also a fair amount of light nuts and peated malt as well. Medium-bodied; Very strong malt flavours with the peat, nuts, light earth and stronger caramel and toffee notes show through soon afterwards, ending with a lot of pitted fruit sweetness and some oak dryness, and with the age, the alcohol shows no astringency or punch and the robust character of the malt gives this the strongest flavours. Aftertaste shows a lot of the strong sweet flavours without anything bitter or deeply assertive throughout, which is a great characteristics - the alcohol only barely comes out, but the oak leaves a nice dry and complex finish. Overall, a very nice, relatively lower alcohol barley wine that shows a lot of characteristics, and is possible to finish in a single sitting by a single person (usually my problem). I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from West LakeView Liqours in Chicago, Illinois on 25-May-2016 for US$8,99 when my second kid was not even two years old and now she's almost five and I have another kid older than she was at the time, sampled at home in Washington on 22-September-2019.
