A beautifully balanced dark beer with complex layers of taste that gives your taste buds hints of chocolate with some dark fruit notes coming through alongside the suggestion of caramel. All of that sweetness is then perfectly balanced by the hops that deliver citrus and spice. Don’t chill this one but try it with some rich chocolate cake or a fine stilton. If that doesn’t hit the spot then marinade some stewing beef overnight with it and pour it into a beef casserole, you won’t regret it.

Cask at the White Lion Inn, Bridgnorth. Poured a clear dark brown colour with a frothy off white head and some clingy lace. The aroma is roasty malt, smoke, dry charcoal, coffee. The flavour is moderate liquorice bitter with a dry roasty cofeee liqouirce hop bitter palate and a long dry bitter finish. Medium bodied with soft carbonation.

500ml bottle, not sure where from. Tanners possibly. Pours dark brown with admirable creamy coloured head. Aroma has plummy hints. Taste is plummy with some chocolate, dark malts, some berry hints along with some other light sweet notes, vanilla maybe? Great body, and good favour profile with some subtle roast and liquorice creeping in on the finish. Pleasantly surprised by this one. I get the impression it is better fresh in bottle than a few days into a cask.
