Deep dark brown coloured body with a thick, but fast-dying tan and light brown head that leaves a pretty nice lace on the sides. Aroma of oatmeal, cherries, light coffee and some relatively pungent nuts with a good deal of cream, lactose and especially vanilla here, but the oats and roasted malt bill is the strongest. Medium-bodied; Rich oatmeal and nutty flavours come through at a big bite with some coffee, vanilla, cream and lactose, along with some bitter rustic and earthy qualities, but this is balanced pretty nicely here. Aftertaste is pungent, deep, bitter and grainy with a good level of sweetness that isn't cloying at all, but enjoyable throughout. Overall, a very nice beer with a great malty kick, some pungent sugars and robust bitterness from the grain and coffee, but balanced nicely throughout. A good beer to sample, especially when the weather still is a bit chilly (as it should be) in early Spring.
