Nicely done dunkel from this Munich stalwart. Deep aroma of roast malt, dark brown with thin beige head. Taste is smooth a mild bitterness that lasts on the palate. One of the better Bavarian dunkers.

500 ml. bottle @ home – darker brown with a red hue with an off-white head around the sides – smell is light cola, syrup, caramel, molasses, spices with a reasonably strong herbal streak – tastes of caramel malts, caramel syrup, molasses, dark fruits, herbal, sticky winter spices, plenty of toast, light bitter in the back – ok medium head – not overly impressive – ok German style exercise

Bottle @ Uncle Chris’ house in Fürth. Clear, dark orange appearance with a nice, light brown head. Quite toasty, somewhat herbal/woody, lightly nutty, mild caramel malty aroma. Nutty, mild toffee, grassy, herbal, toasty malty flavor. Pretty decent.

At Paulaner Im Tal, Munich. Pours chestnut with a nice head and some bubbles. The nose has malt and a hint of chocolate biscuits. The taste is of biscuits and there is a slight toffee note. The palate is medium in structure and texture with a clean finish. Overall, a good beer.

18/08 Draught at the BBF 2011. It had dark reddish brown body with small head. Roasted malt aroma, coffee and caramel. Simple brown sugar and caramel flavor, straightforwardly sweet, a lot. Sticky, longer sweet finish. Has some qualities, it’s not too rustic sweetness, but it’s too intensive for my taste. At least was on the given day.

This was actually at The Brewery in Larnaca, Cyprus, where is was labelled as the house dunkel. The keg told me what beer it really was. Golden chestnut with caramel head. Nice fresh grain aroma. Sweetish character, sort of nutty, with lots of brown sugar.
